That issue was an artistic masterpiece. Assistant editor month was a lot of fun, and this issue still retained its drama.

The second most annoying thing about "Assitant Editor's Month" -- first being that it was forced upon us with no regard for our storylines -- was that it didn't really exist. The editors still had their say, and everything was policed by Shooter. It was rather like when a woman I was dating told me her son wanted to cook his "famous lasagna" for me, and I then sat in the kitchen and watched as she talked him thru every step of the process!

SER: Not to hijack this thread but this comment reminded me that as I inch further into my 30s, it's becoming more difficult to not consider dating women who either have been married or who have kids. It's sort of a scary feeling.

Take it from a divorced guy in his late thirties: when you meet a girl with no kids, you feel like you hit the jackpot!

JB, in this story you have "John Byrne," the character ,being late with a comic, though obviously he had a good excuse. I seem to recall a similar gag in a She-Hulk where you had "John Byrne" inking the comic as well as pencilling, because he was behind schedule and couldn't get it to the inker on time.
Now obviously, the real JB was nothing like late with any of these. But have fans ever taken this stuff about the fictional JB to heart and accused you of tardiness?

Seems like you were the victim of really bad luck, JB, that Assistant Editors month fell when you had planned to conclude a months-in the making epic. You pulled it off with aplomb while including enough "zaniness" that it felt in the spirit of things
As a side note, I love the idea that Reed and Dr. Strange have these "off-camera" discussions about things like Eternity and Death. Do they chat while jogging in Central park, I wonder? getting beers after work? catching a game on Sunday afternoon?

This is an incredible issue of Fantastic Four. Definitely one of the favorite
single comic stories of my youth, FF #262 has an astounding cosmic
scope to the drama and a welcome humor in JB's presence as "the
chronicler." When I was a kid I couldn't wait to read it and couldn't have
been more satisfied with the story when I did. With regard to the art, JB
pulled out all the stops. Everything about the issue was HUGE, yet I still
cared about the central characters as individuals.
But beyond the obvious WOW factor of this entertaining tale, there is the
troublesome matter of its philosophy.
Those of you who haven't read this blog on the subject of FF #262
may find it of interest. It was written by Marc Singer, a literature
professor at Tennesse State University and longtime comics fan.
I dislike Singer's sarcastic tone, but have to admit his very critical
piece makes some points that have me reconsidering the logic of JB's
arguments (made via Reed/Uatu/Odin/Eternity) for Galactus' survival.
From a philosophical perspective, does the argument Reed makes at the
trial hang together? Do the Watcher's statements at the story's
conclusion make sense? Or is the story philosophically dependent on the
panglossian paradigm -- the belief that everything exists for a reason?
And what the hell is Reed doing, citing faith as a rationale?
