I think he was just created to be a character who would look humorously imposing for a panel or two.  I doubt Claremont and Bill the Sink knew they were creating an ongoing character.  But I guess he struck a chord.

Strong Guy looks kind of like something John Krikfalusi would come up with.

The Hawkeye costume made me think of this one. Hawkeye again. Not a mutant but a friend of mutants. Not the best pic of Hawkeye's "indian look" though.

The Vision was stopped in his tracks by Hawkeye's mini skirt.

As fo Storm's punk look. It tends to illustrate how far behind the culture curve comics tended to be.

Hawkeye looks like he could bodyslam the Hulk in that picture on the previous page.

I like punker Storm. Way back when, I remember that my mom bought this issue of X-Men cause she thought Storm looked cool:

I didn't mind punk Storm when she first was introduced.  Maybe that is because it was drawn by Paul Smith.

I always thought that Strog Guy was a rip-off ( passed off as a HOMAGE)
of Liberatore's RanXerox that different artists eventually exagerated (If
you don't know Libratore: Look him up!) . A similar thing was done with
Fontomas-where he ripped (I mean HOMAGED..) into Fantomex.
Fantomas had many different looks over the years but the modern look is
what they appeared to have cribbed (I mean played HOMAGE) to.

Here's RanXerox:

Here's Fantomas:

Back to ugly uniforms!:

What about Iceman?

Something about the rag on his head screams ghetto (Representin'
Westchester! Rollin' hard! Word!).

Why all the spikes? Did he lose his finesse?

The Storm punk did connect with what had happened.  She lost her powers, became harder and tougher for it.  I showed how she had rejected the goddess image and was down to earth.  It also worked well with the Visio Quest during the Fall of the Mutants and her journey.  It worked for the time in her life.

Roberto, it's been almost twenty years since I saw Ranxerox. That HAS to be
a rip/homage.

Man, I'd love to see lawsuits against Marvel to rival their PLASM /Plasmer
one.

******

No big secret there.  Grant Morrison has said that Fantomex was inspired by Fantomas.
