The costume conceit that bothered me the most was the thigh belts with little compartments that popped up back in the 90's.
Not only do they look stupid, they are impractical and look incredibly uncomfortable. Anyone who wore them would have to run around completely blowlegged.

Or, more accurately for where that Astonishing panel came from, he looks like a guy who's been catatonic for a few issues thanks to some major mind games being played on him by a telepath. (Said telepath also, apparently, revealed to him that the "brain damage" that prevented control of his powers was all psychosomatic, hence no visor. Now, whether that will be the new status quo or will be undone/revealed to be a temporary telepathic fix as part of the mind-F has yet to be established.)
As for the costume...he's not in costume there. Well...he's in the Morrison-era costume (or at least part of it), but not his current costume. He was "off duty" when zapped into that brief coma-land, wearing what you see in that picture. Rather than changing into costume to rush to the team's aid when he came out of it, he just rushed to the team's aid.

I could go on for weeks with this
Jesus Christo! This is Aurora???
Art Admas, ya know we love ya, but...Cannonball! Everyone in the pool!
Because YOU demanded it! Thigh belts with pouches! Knee pads! Giant shoulder pads restricting arm movement and even little pouches at the top of the boots! I feel like it is 1994 all over again!

know JRjr has his fans here, but what is it you see in his work? Is it the spacing? Is it the layouts? It can't be the use of line or detail... Just wondering...
And I thought I was the only one! I never liked JR Jr.'s X-Men (and actually told Claremont that to his face at a signing in the '80s when I was about 14 - not one of my better moves). I though it looked rushed and sketchy, particularly after the clean, graceful lines of Paul Smith. But here's the thing: I think he's improved dramatically over the years and his work on Eternals is beautiful.
As to Paul Smith's Storm, I remember seeing her for the first time in Marvel Universe (I sort of got into the X-men backwards) and was just stunned that a `good guy' could look so dark and edgy. I actually think it's a great design and it's not even really a costume - just punk clothes.

JR JR's first X-run was the least favorite thing he has ever done. It was full of dreadful costume designs and garish coloring. Blecch. Love his other stuff, though.

Can't seem to find images of it, but Havok's costume from the Inferno cross-over was all kinds of awful. 17 years later and I'm still scarred by it.
And I don't think Cannonball has ever had a good costume design.

Pretty much every X-costume design in the 90s was awful.

I agree too about JRJr's work not being "right" for the X-Men. I like his work, but there is something about the way he uses lines and details that I feel is better suited to a grittier city street type atmosphere, such as Daredevil, Batman, etc.
Something that occured to me as I was writing this: I would be interested to see Romita Jr. draw a Dick Tracy story, in his style, not imitating Chester Gould. There is a certain "squareness" to his people, and I don't mean that in a bad way, that would be appropriate to Tracy.

JRjr would positively SING on DICK TRACY. That's
inspired casting!
