"Never trust anyone that wears suspenders and a belt! "

"I'm a lumberjack and I'm a man.."

Hmm. You may have a point there..

And, holy Christ! Two of the belts on "Ultimate Cyclops"s costume are binding up his boys! Who the hell thought that was a sensible costume design????

I know JRjr has his fans here, but what is it you see in his work?  Is it the spacing?  Is it the layouts?  It can't be the use of line or detail...  Just wondering...

His work first really caught me with his Daredevil run (Al Williamson was a better inker for him than Dan Green, imo).  Layout is definitely part of it.  It's also the solid way he renders anatomy (among other things) and tells a story.  I also liked his Iron Man run (the more recent one; haven't seen much of his earlier one) and his Spider-Man is pretty cool as well; love the poses he gives Spider-Man.  Punisher War Zone was another good one.

Yeah, enough with the elaborate belts.  Why the heck does Cyclops need some silly functionless belts strapped all over him?

Never did understand it.

I have to agree with the notion the JrJr was cast poorly for X-MEN. To me, he just never meshed well on that book. And, good lord, the costumes! Magneto's big "M" suit...that hideous orange, off-the-shoulder thing Rogue wore (shudder)...don't know if they were his designs, but boy were they ten kinds of bad.

What was with Punk Rock Storm? Did Chris or someone catch a Wendy O.Williams video on MTV one night?

Dude, Paul Smith drew the punk rock Storm, right?

That cover is by JRjr, but I think Smith was the first artist to draw her. I guess he might have done the design too.

I much prefer Ken "Clean-Air" System.  Three fights and only two convictions.

…(Paul Smith) might have done the design too.

I've mentioned elsewhere that Nothing Ever Dies with Chris. It's one of the things that makes him so popular as a writer, I think. It's also what gave us punk Storm. Smitty turned in a sheaf of sketches for new dos for Ororo, and as a goof included the punk image.

Next thing we knew

Something that seems to have been almost completely forgotten, when it comes to costume design, is that there should be a sense (very nearly subliminal) that they are quick and easy to get in and out of. When we look at what I call the "straps-and-flanges" costumes that have been all the rage recently, we cannot but think that it must take a long time for the characters to put 'em on! ("Can you help me with the strap in the back, please?")

It's one of the more obvious examples of the "Wouldn't It Be Cool If…" school winning out over the more traditional "Would It Make Sense to…" school.
