Hmmmm....in the interest of spoilers, I guess I have to be careful here. But this pretty much exemplifies what too many of today's comics creators think about heroes - and even America itself.
Okay, we get it - superheroes are dumb and we should be far too jaded to care about such outdated concepts as right and wrong. That's fine. We understand now.
But could you please stop desecrating our childhood memories? You've made your point. No need to be cruel about it.

Would it be possible to wait to read the story before excoriating Marvel?

I think there's one really good point you can make without reading the story.
1. Why wasn't THIS the ending of Civil War? Wouldn't a big deal like this have obviously been a better and more emotionally satisfying ending?
For some reason, I just can't get upset about this. I guess that's a tribute to how little I care about M****l now.

Rafael, I understand what you are saying. It's obvious that this is a publicity stunt to increase sales ala The Death of Superman. The main difference is that Superman "died" saving the world in big superhero fashion. This current stunt is such the opposite of that. Add in the fact that Marvel seems to use killing or bringing folks back from the dead to generate sales and it is more than tiresome. I know Captain America will be back fighting alongside Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver one day. But the stunts to get us there are more than over-exposed. I'm not asking for much I'd just like to see more villian vs. hero fist-to-cuffs. The hero vs. hero or let's talk about our problems stuff is fine in small doses but not when they dominate the super-hero industry.

I'm all for giving a storyline a chance, Greg and Rafael. I made the exact same argument when Dwayne McDuffie started on Fantastic Four.
The problem is that we've read Civil War - it's written and finished. And I didn't like what I read. Not what I thought might happen - what did happen.
I agree that you can't judge a movie by the first five minutes. But by the time you are an hour in, I think you've got enough information to make a call one way or another. Same thing applies to comics.

Allow me to add one more thing about waiting for the story to end before I'm allowed to make judgement. This is what we are always asked when Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis and now the new "big" stories come about. Guess what? Years have gone by and none of these stories have really ended. They just merge into the new "let's wait and see how it ends" story. Give me some real conclusion to one of these kooky stories and I'll shut-up. But I'm not waiting for another three years to comment on something I feel is silly to begin with.

This is, of course, a publicity stunt. But that doesn't mean it won't be a good story. I have no faith in Bendis, or Millar, or JMS, but I do have a lot of faith in the guy who did the Unthinkable (bringing back Bucky) and managed to get a terrific story out of it. And he is still writing Captain America.
Also, we don't even know if he is dead. Or if he is faking his own death. Or anything at all about the story besides an image of Cap being shot.
