I think the key difference is between expecting and hoping.

It's like when Optimus Prime died.  But he was a robot.  How do you bring back Cap without some stupid retcon or without the aid of some omnipotent being?

Okay, then. Looks like a bunch of books will have to be cancelled in the interests of realism. After all, if a crimefighter is killed in the line of duty, doesn't that mean End Of Series?

Or, will books like "Captain America" become, "Captain America's Mourning Supporting Cast"?

***

no, it doesn't have to mean the end of the series. as i mentioned earlier, captain america himself was killed in the line of duty by steranko back in the 1960s, albeit for an issue or two. we can all think of other instances where characters have been killed and the comic book continues.

i think we all know that steve rogers is not really dead. making it appear like he's been killed for a while isn't a bad thing in itself. it only becomes a bad thing if the story isn't well-written. i don't think that is a concern with brubaker at the helm. rest assured though, if he does have captain america sodomised and eating kittens, i'll drop the book.

but if it's a story about a soldier getting shot, i'll give it a chance

From another board:

Glad your dead, Steve!

Always hated your drug induced moralism, your 'make-mine-machismo', your childish heroism, your ugly logo and the fact that you never had a moustache.

you know, come to think about it...

JUST SKIP THIS ENTIRE STORY LINE...

just like the Spiderman Clone Saga or Death of Superman... just skip it altogether...

then you will realize it's no big deal... and all this talk is just waste of peoples time.

They totally bring Optimus back to save the universe from the hate-plague later in the series, though. But it does deplete the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.

Steranko has done this story. Waid has done this story. Gruenwald did a variation of this story. I'll continue to give Brubaker and Epting my money, they do terrific work.
