Incidentally, I read Manhunter no. 26 this afternoon. Pretty dynamic art in
that one. Felt the same way about the artwork in The Spirit no. 1, Green
Lantern no. 15, and Justice League of America no. 4.

I find myself buying a lesser number of comics than I have in quite
some time: I buy and follow 12 titles a month, and I'm really enjoying
them. And I'm an old guy who's read everything from O'Neil/Adams to
Claremont/Byrne to Miller/Janson, etc. Sure, there are bad comics out
there by bad writers and artists, but I don't buy what I don't like. And my
tendency is to avoid griping about the bad and focusing on those 12 or
so things I really like right now.

That said, 25 years ago, I bought tons of titles that I didn't necessarily
like, so there's always been bad stuff. Sure, comics sold more copies back
then than they do now, but I don't think right now is the Golden Age of
Crap either.

Stephen, love your work.  I hope you don't get turned off to the forum.  I may lurk more than nayhting else, but I do like the interaction of comic professionals.  Sometimes, though, someone may ask a question such as "what is 1 plus 1?" and receive an answer of "orange".  Unfortunately, that is the way of the Internet.  And while the answer may be frustrating to you, trying to publically dig only gets other people involved that really have nothing to do with the initial question. Mob mentalities quickly get ugly.

I do respect that you attempted to start a positive thread.  Sometimes it feels like so few people try to do that.  I would also have loved to have read a thoughtful answer to your question about inspiration.  So lets turn things about and have something more interesting than a whole bunch of (insert your own personal phrase for what you would call this phenomena here).

Stephen, you have beautiful work.  What in today's world is inspiring you?  What music, television, art, events, and so on, do you feel lend to your hand when putting something on the page?

Recent new comics I enjoy are:

New Avengers (I realise many people don't like it here, but it's one of my favorite books, the recent one shots with Luke Cage and Captain America cemented that)
X-Factor (PAD on X-factor, what's not to love)
and I also love Invincible and FABLES (Greatest monthly comic atm possibly)

There's a lot out there which I enjoy.

And Davis has a Clan Destine mini coming out sometime in 2007, I'm not sure it's been solicitied yet.

Don, wow..SO many different things inspire ME...I just saw Pans Labyrinth..that was VERY inspiring...
Musically, really into a band called Covenant, Dead Can Dance and Juno Reactor always is good to draw to ( they contributed to The Matrix films).

Artistically , these days I am in AWE of the usual guys..Perez/Davis/Ross..etc..

As for the NEWISH  batch of guys..? I think Bryan Hitch..and IvanReis..Steve Epting..Leinil Yu..I could  go on and on..as Ive said..I really believe there are more GREAT Artists out there than EVER before.

 How about anyone  else?

Stephen Sadowski,

Forgive my ignorance, but I was away from comics for years and just returned when I recently started writing them. I noticed several people commenting on and complimenting your work, so I assume your working professionally in comics. Can i ask what you've done/ are doing? Just curious, but I'm not familiar with your name, and I'd like to check out your work.

Sometimes I can be so slow on the uptake it's a wonder I can even feed myself. After nine pages of this thread, it has finally filtered thru to my brain that all this sturm und drang springs largely from the fact that my answer to the question that forms the thread's title was not "Your stuff."

Thought it was an ongoing, though a mini would make more sense - as much as I wouldn't mind an ongoing.

".I really believe there are more GREAT Artists out there than EVER before."

They are good, but their storytelling must equal or surpass their predecessors before they can be called "great". Panel after panel of people standing around talking, or splash pages full of empty space is not great storytelling. The fault is also that of the writers, but the artists should encourage them stop with the decompression nonsense.

This is something you have inferred from his posts, or is it something else that leads you to this conclusion?

The initial question was not a bad question. It seems to me, all the sturm und drang springs largely from your failure to really give much of an answer. Of course, you don't have to give an answer. You can be vague and evasive, and misdirect all you want. It creates a more lively discussion, at the least. Still, it would be nice to get your thoughts, if any, on something recent that caught your eye which maybe we haven't heard about yet.

I've been following along for quite a while, natch, so I know of many of the contemporary creators that you do like, and don't like, and that you seem reluctant to talk specifics about modern comics. I also have come to understand that you don't really read modern comics, unless they have some impact on what you're working on. But, everyone doesn't know that. Even I don't know what comics you are "looking at", and might have an opinion on, at least artwork-wise. I'd be interested to know what you think of some of the work I'm interested in, or even hear comments on stuff I've not tried. Have you seen Eric Powell (The Goon), or Guy Davis (BPRD), or fill-in-the-blank? Is there anything recent that you've seen that can be discussed at all? I think that's what this thread is supposed to be about.

You must read very fast Joe. I've never been "chained". You've been around long enough to know better.
