Ryan's answer is so damn good I can't wait until tomorrow to do my bit.

While Perlman was an excellent choice for Hellboy, and did an excellent job of it (with pretty disappointing material, sadly).  Hellboy had nowhere NEAR the built-in expectations that Superman did for Reeve.  They're polar opposites: Perlman had to bring the obscure to life through a veneer of makeup and appliances, while Reeve had to live up to massive expectations with nothing more than his own credibility.  AND he was a relative unknown - although that may have helped.
