You've absolutely got to have Wolverine on those X-Men teams. I know he became ridiculously overexposed beginning in the late '80s, but during the glory days of the X-Men, he was an integral part of the team.
The one big change I would make is to keep Thunderbird alive and part of the team. He had a great deal of potential; the idea of a proud but insecure hero who always feels second-rate would have been an interesting addition to this mix.
That's really the only change I'd make. Uncanny X-Men was just about a perfect comic during those first few years under Claremont, Cockrum & Byrne.
