John Byrne's Fourth World.  I felt his book was had the flavor and excitement of Jack Kirby's original work.

I have very much enjoyed John Romita Jr.'s recent portrayals of the Eternals and Hercules.  They remind me very much of the spirit of Jack Kirby, something that for so long I thought lay in the pencil and ink of John Byrne.  Maybe these feelings have much to do with the fact that JB has not been at Marvel for quite some time now.  Regardless, I ask:

TODAY'S TOSS-UP (5/21):

Who is the Jack Kirby of today?  John Byrne or John Romita Jr.?

JRjr - his style has just become so dynamic and idiosyncratic.

  • JB's New Gods/Fourth World over Simonson's Orion
  • JB and JRJr are both prolific artists who can do multiple titles on a monthly basis so that category is a wash.  JB has created more characters than JRJr. so he wins in that regard. Not to discount JRJr's input on plots, but JB has written more comics than JRJr. With all due respect to both men's careers, I don't know if either is worthy the title "The Jack Kirby of today", (I don't know if anyone will do what KIrby accomplished) but JB is closer to the model than Romita Jr.

John Byrne - the many titles and output of work, and quality.  Mr. Byrne surpasses Mr. Kirby in writing and Mr. Romita jr.
