I can see why you might not like Layton's Hercules stuff - it definitely was silly. But it was just one guy's take on these characters (in a mini-series, no less); I never thought it caused them any harm.

And to Layton's credit, he has done plenty of "serious," well-respected work on Iron Man.

Not everyone feels his work on Iron Man deserves as much respect as it
has received, Bruce.

And I know that I am in the minority in not liking his art, but I'm cool with
that. I find that his approach to anatomy, perspective and overall
dynamics just don't live up to my standards.

I think that he can be a fine inker, though. So long as he leaves his own
ego in check and refrains from re-drawing...

(It's criminal how much he did that to JRjr, for example. Or check out the
Hulk annual where he inked JB, and redrew at least half the faces...
Maybe I should have referred to him as the proto-Nelson!)

Proto as in prototype, as far as being the recipient of undeserved acclaim
goes. When it happened with Liefeld it went to whole new levels - both in
the amount of acclaim as well as the depth-of-meagerness of the talent
involved. Layton is far more talented than Liefeld, and did not receive
anywhere near the amount of superstar hype, but I see a clear parallel
there...

Edited to remove the words "too much" when I meant to just say
"refrains from redrawing" - any redrawing is too much!

"Proto as in prototype. Recipient of undeserved acclaim."

****

I've never heard "prototype" defined that way.  That's what confused me I guess.

I clarified how I was using it after you copied my quote. Hope I'm not
confusing anyone!

Neither

I don't think I bought the Avengers East comics that JB wrote, so neither again.

JB's Hercules.

(Tho, in all honesty, I haven't really followed Layton's work since he was the steady inker on Joe Staton in the mid-70s. I picked up the "Demon in the Bottle" Iron Man arc, but that was probably the last time I have seen his work.)

Yesterday: technically neither since i don't buy either -- but i do find the notion of "Bucky" replacing Steve slightly LESS repulsive than Tony Stark becoming a super-villain.

today: Layton's Hercules -- loved them for what they were (Possible Future stories in a Humorous tone) -- of course, if Hercules HAD defeated Galactus by getting him drunk it would be bad, but since he didn't, all's good.

while JB draws a fantastic Hercules, any particularly definative storytelling with him does't come to mind - certainly wouldn't mind seeing that someday, tho'
