TODAY'S TOSS-UP (5/9):
Byrne's Hercules (From the Avengers East and She-hulk I think) or Layton's Hercules (from 2 minis and a graphic novel)?

Byrnes!!!!!
Don't even mention Layton's! AAAAAARGH - those minis are absolute
travesties! Ever single copy of Prince of Power ever published should be
hunted down and burned...

Y'see, I just don't know that JB ever did enough of the character to really get an accurate gauge. I'm sure that if he had done a regular Hercules book, it would be great, but I really can't think of many times when he used the character.
I enjoyed Layton's Hercules mini-series for what they were. Silly, yes, but Hercules strikes me as a somewhat over-the-top character.
Al, you really don't like Bob Layton's work, do you?

Layton is the proto-Liefeld.
A poor artist (tho, to be fair, nowhere near as poor as Liefeld), an even
poorer story teller, who receives massive attention nowhere near what his
very-meager talents deserve.
Even as a kid, Layton used to drive me nuts. "This is just bad," I'd say to
my friends who were all excited by his hype, and not paying any attention
to what he was doing.
Having Marvel's (nay, all of comicdom's) greatest threat be defeated in a
drinking contest was an unforgivable act of his own ego - "I wanted to
write something that suited my sense of humour", he's said. Fine. But
don't piss all over great characters (Hercules and Galactus) to do so.

Whoa.....shocked to hear such a diatribe aimed at Layton's art. I can't speak to his writing but I think he's at least a good artist.
"Proto-Liefeld"?
What does that mean?
