Thought Balloons, they can help further the story, open the character's thoughts and world to the reader.

Thought Balloons.  Aaron and Joe covered my thoughts on the subject.

Better than exposition.

You guys have pretty much said everything I could, but thought balloons definitely belong in comics.

Why hamstring yourself as a writer by not using a potentially valuable tool? Plus, there are some times that dialogue just won't work. You need that internal monologue and thought balloons are the best way to provide it.

The trend away from using thought balloons is, I believe, a by-product of too many writers coming into comics from television and film. But comics are their own medium -- they shouldn't be written like a movie or TV script.

You all know I am strongly pro thought balloon.  Joe summed up my position very nicely.  Without them we see some pretty silly dialogue, like characters talking out loud about what they are doing (i.e. sneaking up on the bad guy).  They exist as a unique element to comics and should be utilized when appropriate.

Thought Ballons, same thoughts as Troy on this one. They show the truth in what they are thinking and not the lies which come out of their mouths.

Thought balloons instead of speech balloons (character is alone) or expository captions.

Gonna chime in myself here.  I have never understood the trend away from thought balloons, even from classic comics writers like JB (who is a master of balloon placement, period, and so I respect his opinion on the matter).  It's still a major part of newspaper comics.  It's even approximated in other media (open any Stephen King book and look for the italics).  But trends are what they are.  I miss dialogue on comics covers too.  I remember the thrill of recognition when JB brought back Iron Fist ("You are Iron Fist...").

So, while I am honestly intrigued that some writers think they can write better by denying themselves one of the chief weapons of their arsenal, I have to vote against them.  Viva la thought balloon!
