I would give Marvel a try again when TPTB start learning to respect the characters they produce and the fans who stuck by Marvel for years.

As a stunt double for Robert Patrick? Silver Surfer.

As a passing facsimile of an ex-girlfriend? Dark Phoenix.

The most I pick up are back issues or trades. I haven't felt moved by
anything current.

The sense of continuity is lost for me at Marvel. So it is either a one shot or
back issues or anything John Romita Jr. or an interesting creative is working
on. No regular pick ups.

As far as DC, I regularly (or am going to make it a regular thing) pick up The
Spirit.

Current edge goes to DC.

I grew up with Marvel, now i have been reading DC, because Marvel does not exist anymore.

I prefer Batman over Superman!

Dark Phoenix or Silver Surfer?....where or what?

I'm a couple of days behind so....

  • - Marvel vs. D.C.: When I was a kid, it was Marvel, no contest. I really started paying attention to D.C. when Watchmen and Dark Knight came out (I was around 15-16 then). Since then, my appreciation for the Distinguished Competition has only grown.

Now, I read almost exclusively D.C. titles. As many others have stated, I don't care for what Marvel has done to its classic characters. And while D.C. has made some mistakes, the folks there seem to appreciate their history more and are putting out some pretty good comics these days.

  • Batman vs. Superman: Again, I've changed my position on this as I've gotten older.

When I was a teenager, I thought Batman was cool and Superman was the "big blue boyscout." But as I've gotten older, maybe I'm not as cool as I once was and the timeless ethics of the Man of Steel seem more important.

I can't remember which character said this or even which writer wrote it (I'm thinking Geoff Johns, but don't hold me to that). This is a paraphrase, but it gets the meaning across:

"Batman is the smartest guy around. No, Superman is smarter. After all, he's got a family and a career and a real life. All Batman has is a cave and a computer."

Having said that, I'm a complete mark for the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams run on Batman. Those are some of my favorite stories ever.

  • Dark Phoenix vs. Silver Surfer: Obviously, the Surfer is a more likable character.

But I'll go with Dark Phoenix - she was the central figure in one of the greatest storylines in comics history. Although I like the Silver Surfer, I can't think of a single story of his that comes close to the Dark Phoenix saga.

Re: Dark Phoenix/Silver Surfer.
Two (for me) completely different characters. I'd have to pick Dark Phoenix, the Surfer stories never did much for me. As he's been written over the years, there's just too much angst for me.

Marvel all the way. To me, the coolest things that have happened to DC
comics all came out of them trying to keep up with Marvel -- or doing
things in a way that Marvel pioneered.

As JB recently stated, the concept of super heroes dealing with real
problems (JB referenced Spider-Man dealing with average joe type
dilemmas -- trying to pay the rent, ulcers, trying to get a date....), while
all the time dealing with fantasticly out-of-this-world villains or
problems. That idea -- that these amazing characters are still dealing
with normal problems still gets me excited.

Also: Marvel has waaayyy cooler villains: Dr. Doom, Galactus, Magneto,
Red Skull, Green Goblin, Hydra...

To me, even if I have next to no interest in their current product, it will
ALWAYS BE MARVEL!!!

Since the Surfer is only an accessory to Genocide I'll pick him.
