I'm a couple of days behind so....
- - Marvel vs. D.C.: When I was a kid, it was Marvel, no contest. I really started paying attention to D.C. when Watchmen and Dark Knight came out (I was around 15-16 then). Since then, my appreciation for the Distinguished Competition has only grown.
Now, I read almost exclusively D.C. titles. As many others have stated, I don't care for what Marvel has done to its classic characters. And while D.C. has made some mistakes, the folks there seem to appreciate their history more and are putting out some pretty good comics these days.
- Batman vs. Superman: Again, I've changed my position on this as I've gotten older.
When I was a teenager, I thought Batman was cool and Superman was the "big blue boyscout." But as I've gotten older, maybe I'm not as cool as I once was and the timeless ethics of the Man of Steel seem more important.
I can't remember which character said this or even which writer wrote it (I'm thinking Geoff Johns, but don't hold me to that). This is a paraphrase, but it gets the meaning across:
"Batman is the smartest guy around. No, Superman is smarter. After all, he's got a family and a career and a real life. All Batman has is a cave and a computer."
Having said that, I'm a complete mark for the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams run on Batman. Those are some of my favorite stories ever.
- Dark Phoenix vs. Silver Surfer: Obviously, the Surfer is a more likable character.
But I'll go with Dark Phoenix - she was the central figure in one of the greatest storylines in comics history. Although I like the Silver Surfer, I can't think of a single story of his that comes close to the Dark Phoenix saga.
