I don't even see this as a real comparison.

Jarvis is a nice little secondary character. But other than Roger Stern's Masters of Evil storyline or the Crimson Cowl storyline from 40 years ago, when has he ever truly been important? His role is to deliver semi-humorous lines like, "Oh, dear. I shall have quite a mess to tend to!"

Alfred, on the other hand, is a central figure in the Batman universe. He is the "loving grandfather" in the Alfred-Batman-Robin family tree (the Batman Begins movie really got this part right). Remove him and the whole Batman dynamic changes considerably.

Definitely Alfred. I don’t have as much of a sense of who Jarvis is, and anyway, it seems vaguely inegalitarian for the Avengers to have a servant, anyway. Why it doesn’t seem wrong for Batman to have a servant for the same reason, I don’t know!

Maybe if I’d seen an endearing live-action portrayal of Jarvis, like Alan Napier’s and Michael Gough’s Alfreds, I’d feel differently. :-)
