Fantastic Four.

Those 34 issues of Uncanny X-Men with Chris Claremont is possibly
John's best collaboration (although his 9-issue run on Captain America
with Roger Stern offers fierce competition, and stood a chance of edging
out the X-Men had it continued longer). X-Men: Hidden Years was also
an enjoyable read, but abbreviated with only 22 issues. Then we've got
the half-dozen or so issues of the X-Men titles that John wrote around
the time of the relaunch. All in all, not a bad body of work with the
mutants. (Yeah, there's a probably a cross-over here or there two, but
I've already been anal enough).

But, as good as his X-Men efforts were, Fantastic Four is likely John's best
solo effort with the Big Two firms, clocking in at staggering (by today's
standards) 64 issues including the pair he did prior to his unbroken run.
Plus the Annuals. Plus that GREAT What If? story. Adding in the 10 issues
that John drew for Marv Wolfman and Bill Mantlo just nails the dismount.

I fell in love with John's art on the X-Men, but I really grew to respect and
appreciate John's craft during his run on Fantastic Four.

TODAY'S TOSS-UP (1/7):

JB's Fantastic Four or JB's Alpha Flight?

I greatly enjoyed his FF, but as many of you know, I became a Byrne victim with Alpha Flight #1 and LOVED this series.

Fantastic Four.

I realize I'm putting my Canadian passport at risk, but when reading Alpha
Flight
I got the impression John wasn't having much fun with the
characters. The crossover with Incredible Hulk (and subsequent
departure) only seemed to confirm my intuition. It was good, creative,
enjoyable work, but it didn't have the swagger of his Fantastic Four.

JB's Fantastic Four, but JB's AF is one of my top 5 favorite runs, anyway.

JB's FF wins by volume and impact on the MU.

1/6: JB's X-Men

1/7: JB's Alpha Flight

Though JB's FF has a special place in my personal comics history.  I would read and re-read my brother's copies constantly when I was between 7 and 9.

FF

(and Ted: I think your calendar is running a little fast; it's only the 7th, not
17th)
