Subby's a fun character, and I love the Bill Everett run from the 70's, but down deep, where character really lives, he's a boy who goes about cutting surfacemen's air hoses, displaying their freshly dead bodies in his local museum, and who will grow up to become a villian who invades New York with an army of giant sea monsters and scam on a better man's wife.
Aquaman's a hero, and a better one than modern audiences seem capable of giving him credit for. He's been a father, a king, a husband, and somehow survived losing all of that and more (his hand, his dignity... you try to live after headlining JL Detroit and being written by a sleepy-seeming Peter David!) His TV pilot didn't get picked up, and yet he still swims onwards!
Again, I love the S-M (wait, that doesn't sound right...) but Aquaman's my pick. Now if only we could find a writer who could think of something worthwhile to do with him....
