The Essentials by a long shot.

Marvel has done a great job of representing the 1960s, '70s and now even the '80s with their Essential collection. You can get a broad cross-section of Marvel comics throughout the years.

The D.C. Showcase stuff, on the other hand, almost exclusively is early 1960s work. It doesn't help that I'm not a fan of D.C.'s Silver Age stories - they lacked the believability that Marvel books of the same era had.

I'd love to see some Showcase volumes from the late 1960s and 1970s, as D.C. did some great work then. I'd partcularly like to see some Batman/Detective Comics and Wonder Woman volumes from that time frame.

I only have one or two of each.  Not enough to form an opinion yet.  Showcases get the vote for better covers.

The only way to answer this is basically comparing content.  Are you a Marvel guy or a DC guy?  The actual collections are identical in what they represent, their length and price.

I think it has to be a tie.

They're the comics of my childhood.

When I was a kid, there were two "kinds" of characters that really appealed to me, big, strong guys, like the Hulk & Thing, and fire guys, like the Human Torch and Firestorm.  Back in the day, during my own Golden Age, when Gerry Conway was writing The Fury of Firestorm, Firestorm was my favorite super-hero (I thought he looked cool), so I ask.

TODAY'S TOSS-UP (11/7):

Firestorm or the Human Torch?

I'm very fond of Firestorm, so even though he's not the icon the Torch is, I'm going with him.

edit: Toch?

11/06: Marvel Essentials

Today: I'd have to say the Human Torch.
