I must be out of the loop, 'cause I'm not aware of the Michael Golden controversy.
But to answer the question...I'll go with McFarlane. Sure, he became the poster child for Everything Wrong with Comics in the 1990s (and perhaps deservedly so). But his work with writer David Michelinie on Amazing Spider-Man was great and helped take the book to new heights of popularity.
(Okay, I just found the thread on Golden. Man, is that scummy.)
