First of all, let me wish Ted a belated happy birthday. Sounds like you had a great time planned.
Catching up....
Stern or DeMatteis - Man, I hate picking against Uncle Rog, but I'll have to go with J.M. DeMatteis, whom I consider one of the most underrated writers in comics history. He's arguably the most successful Justice League writer ever, as people still talk about his run on the title 15 years after it ended. Plus, he had a long, enjoyable run on Captain America, wrote the fantastic "Kraven's Last Hunt" story and created the "I...Vampire" stories for D.C.
DeMatteis or Mantlo - Again, I'll go with J.M. DeMatteis. However, I'm a big Mantlo fan, too.
Waid or Johns - Geoff Johns. Love his work on JSA and The Flash.
Slott or Bendis - I'll have to take a pass on this one, since I'm (sadly) not familiar with Dan Slott's work. Heard good things about him, though. Bendis is pretty good, although I don't consider him a favorite.
