Andrew, you may be thinking of Replikon, an alien who fought Green Lantern and Green Arrow back in the late 70's. Replikon was a shapeless  mist in his/her natural state, but assumed physical form after observing Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman aboard the JLA satellite.

DC also has Amazo, The Composite Legionnaire, Bion, and a rather bizarre one-off appearance by a creation called Super-Duper... Batman's body, Hawkman's wings, Green Lantern's arms, Flash's legs,... and Wonder Woman's head!

Marvel has a few composite characters on it's roster as well, such as the Super-Adaptoid, Mimic, in some respects Taskmaster, and occasionally, Rogue.

I like the fact that so many folks here are selecting Metamorpho, a character who is himself visually comprised of four substances. With that in mind I came up with my list:

1.) Metamorpho
2.) Ultra, the Multi-Alien
3.) Robby Reed
4.) B'Wana Beast, who was able to fashion bizarre, amalgamated creatures out of whatever animals happened to be nearby...
