I don't know how easy to find it would be but Neal Adams Deadman stories were also reprinted in a miniseries by DC in the mid-80's.

With a great Neal Adams back-up story in the first issue where a little boy discovers a friend that comes and visits him in his bed at night and turns out to be the devil.  Really cool.

Oh darn it...two of my favorite DC characters!

Hmm, they both work best as supporting cast/guest appearances. If I had
to
read a comic in which they were the star though...

A very tough choice, but visually, Phantom Stranger

Historically, I would chose Dr. Fate. The character in his current version is so screwed up though that I pick the Phantom Stranger.

I really liked the Hector Hall Dr. Fate myself. I'm going to say Dr. Fate by the thinniest nun's hair, only because I dig the helmet so much.
