The Wrath of Khan.

Empire set in motion some things that came back to haunt the Star Wars franchise, while Khan set the high bar for the Trek movies.

Wrath of Khan.

I watched this with my girlfriend a while back, who had never seen any Trek before.  Her reaction to it was quite revealing, and made me look at the film without any of the Trek-trappings and familiarity that I always had.  It is simply a very good film, period.  It's not just a good Trek movie, or even a good SF movie; it's a good movie.

I love both Khan and Empire Strikes Back.

In terms of purely being a sequel, I think Empire wins it. It takes ideas and characters from the original and expands on them, gives them more depth and throws in all sorts of brilliant extras (like Yoda). A perfect second act, condemned for all time to be let down by the third act.

Khan is a great sequel to The Space Seed, but in many ways flips the bird to Star Trek: The Motion Picture (and rightly so), so isn't so great as a sequel in that sense. Fine film though. Khaaaaaan!
