i honestly can't fathom any kind of story with Doom finding Captain America - UNLESS Namor was already a founding member of the Avengers. Otherwise Doom would just throw the Capcicle back as being of no use to him.

No way Troy! Doom finds Cap, revives him and manipulates him into leading the forces of Latveria against the Avengers! Battle rages until somehow the Avengers realize they are battling the original Captain America and finally convince him to join their side in vanquishing Doom!!!

Doom would thaw him out in a heartbeat. Even if just for the shield! "A truly momentous find! Only Doom could be worthy of such a thing! Perhaps this mysterious figure will be the key to the accomplishment of a long-overdue goal: the destruction of Reed Richards, and the accursed Fantastic Four!"

well - see - that's my point - Captain America isn't Namor; he isn't Baby Kal-el -- he's a known quanity with established loyalties and a legendary heroic reputation - manipulating him into attacking american heroes isn't really likely, nor does he have "power" which Doom would covet the way he did with Silver Surfer and Namor - all he could be is bait for a trap. i could see Doom getting to all kinds of characters "first" and having an impact - from Thor to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver - but not Cap.

Dr. Doom had found the frozen Captain America first! Brainwashes him, sets him up as a mole to infiltrate the Avengers, and Cap ends up a member! Different route, same outcome!

Doom finds Cap first!
But how does he use either Cap himself or the shield to launch the Baxter Building into space? I mean, we all agree, that's Doom's ultimate goal, right?

You know, in this particular case it does not have to be either-or, you could easily combine both stories, if Namor had joined the Avengers from the get-go the Avengers would not have found Cap as they stumbled across him while hunting down the Sub-Mariner. You could have Doom searching for Atlantis to exact revenge on Namor for "betraying" him by joining the Avengers, and while searching for Atlantis Doom finds the frozen Steve Rogers. I can see it as one of those 1970's double sized What If? issues.

I want Namor as a founding Avenger. Dunno why. Tuesday, 3/23 toss-up: better adaptors - Wolfman and Colan (Dracula) or Thomas and Buscema (Conan the Barbarian)?

Gotta go with Wolfman and Colan. Good as Big John was on Conan, Colan was born to draw Dracula.
