i don't think either way should be a problem, but i don't call $2010 "twenty ten dollars", i wouldn't go to the store and buy "twenty ten apples" - so, ultimately, i think i wouln't find "twenty ten years" to be formally proper. isn't "Ninteen Eighty Five" (for example) for 1985  just a compressed "Ninteen HUNDRED Eighty Five" - we certainly aren't going to be thinking the year is "Twenty HUNDRED Ten." eh?
