I am going with Galactus ate Krypton.  This is revealed when Galactus comes to eat Earth and recognizes Kal-El as the little baby in the spaceship that got away.  Superman is of course enraged and there is a mighty smackdown, but in the end he chooses to become Galactus' herald and seek out uninhabited worlds in order to  save both Earth and the rest of the universe.
