As far as stories go, I'll take the original X-Men over the early Avengers.  The Mighty Ones would cream the World's Strangest Teens in a fight though.

Avengers by a mile. Altho the X-Men as a concept is stronger, I like the
individual members of the Avengers better. Give me Thor over Cyclops, Iron
Man over the Angel.
