That's a great question! Here's how I see it....
Obviously, Spider-Man has been a much more successful character. Ditko played a huge role in making him such a phenomenon - and not just in designing the character's costume. Ditko was very much a co-plotter who introduced many of the concepts, themes, villains and supporting characters that have Spider-Man so popular.
However, it's also true that Spider-Man has been a team effort. John Romita Sr. added a great deal to the mythos (particularly in the romance/soap opera department) when he took over from Ditko and the book really started to thrive then. Many future writers and artists have all played a role in making Spider-Man Marvel's franchise character.
But with Dr. Strange? I'd say it pretty much begins and ends with Ditko. Has anyone come close to matching his run in the 40 years since? I'm not sure Dr. Strange has ever been a successful character except for that magical (pun intended) period when Steve Ditko was piloting the ship.
