Charlie Brown for the little red-headed girl. Unrequited love, after all, doesn't have to be good idea. In fact, it rarely is... Unrequited love is actually a prevalent theme throughout the Peanuts strip. Linus' love for Miss Othmar, Sally's love for Linus, Lucy's love for Schroeder, Patty's love for Chuck, possibly Marcie's love for Patty... Woodstock's love for his mom... Very Fruedian. And sort of ties in with the discussion over on the Battlestar Galactica thread... :~)
Betty actually gets a fair share of dates and dances with Archie. Her attentions towards him are hardly "unrequited." She just can't get Archie to shake his lustful infatuation with the dark, self-centered, competitive, and hyper-acquisitive Veronica. If there were no Betty to compete against, Veronica's interest in keeping Archie dangling wouldn't be as strong. I think Betty knows that she and Archie are likely to wind up with one another eventually, once Veronica gets out of Riverdale and begins to take advantage of all the opportunities the world has waiting for her. Betty just wants him now, she wants to win, and she needs Archie to not screw up so badly in the interim that he wrecks their future together.
Regarding the spelling of the name Schulz, I once was given a spelling test by a temp firm as part of a job interview. Not only did I find the specified number of misspelled words, but one of their examples talked about the "famous cartoonist Schultz," so I corrected that for them as well. I don't think it improved my score.
