Jim Lee (and the spelling of McFarlane is correct).

McFarlane. I know he's not the most popular guy in the comics world (okay, that may be an understatement), but his late '80s work on Amazing Spider-Man absolutely blew me away. What made that work was that he was paired with a good writer (Dave Michelinie) and a good editor (Jim Salicrup) who could get them most out of his talents. He wasn't a particularly good storyteller and there should be a constitutional amendment banning him from ever writing another comic book.

But when it came to the "Wow!" factor, McFarlane had it like only a handful of other artists in the history of the genre.
