"how much does it cost to have that done? "

------------------------------------------------------------

The range of prices for binding jobs is anywhere from $25 to $75 per volume.  The price can vary significantly from binder to binder and is principally affected by materials (i.e., leather vs. buckram) and the scope of work (i.e., staple and page removal, logo dies, etc.)  You should check out the Binding Forum over on the Marvel Masterworks message boards for examples and binding sources.

Pretty cool.  I may have that done myself.

Are the covers of each individual comic removed before binding?

It's really up to you.  Some people have the covers and/or ads removed in order to ensure smooth flow of the stories within each issue and between issues.  I tend to bind the full comics with nothing removed other thany any inserts like trading cards, Lakeside Tatooz, etc.  I think the covers are an important part of each issue, so I keep them.  I also like the ads for nostalgic purposes, so I don't cut out any of the ad pages.

As James has said you should check out the thread shown at the bottom of page 1. My binding is done by David Banks/Capital Bindings, but because of overload they are currently not taking new customers.

I think the photos are giving you the wrong impression of the color of the covers. All of Ray's JB books are done in a dark purple. The flash photography does not accurately show the color.

David, since you're posting here, any idea when they'll start accepting new customers again?  I was planning on having my first binding done sometime next spring (JB's NEXT MEN) as a tax refund gift to myself, and I've heard so many great testimonials from people here at the JBF of Capitol Bindery.

On an aside, would NEXT MEN's 31 issues (plus 2112 if I want to be complete) have to be broken up into two volumes?  Anybody else have this series bound?

My Next Men volume contains all of the Next Men issues, but not 2112, which I have bound elsewhere.

Roger,

I will be reviewing the situation late April, early May.
Right now I have a list of 47 people who want to be
notified when we begin accepting work from
brand-new customers.

We have bound JB's Next Men 13 times, but only
once has it been broken into a two volume set. I can't
remember if any of those volumes have contained
2112. I don't think so.

I will pass on your kind words to the binders at
Capitol Bindery. Kevin and Robert continue to be
amazed and grateful as people from around the
country and the world continue to send in projects.

To answer an earlier question. I remove as many non-story pages as I can before binding. I think David Banks once told me that between 10% & 20% of his clients do the same whilst the majority leave the comics intact. It's a matter of personal choice. The great thing about these books is that you get to do them the way that you want them. My prime objective is to have these great series in a format which enhances reading and storage.

Those look really nice Ray.  I keep thinking about getting my comics bound but haven't made the leap.
