Man, I love Carlos Mencia.  I think he's got some of the funniest material out there right now.

I've never quite understood the appeal of Mencia.  Every time I see the show he's telling the audience how edgy or politically incorrect he is.  I kind of feel like if you have to tell people...

The issue of anti-intellectualism is deeply rooted in the American psyche.  After all, Uncle Sam was created as a average guy who "outsmarted" people who were more highly educated with common sense and juvenile humor.

edited to fix typo

It depends - are we talking about football players' boobs?

All this talk of beer makes me thirsty.

Sadly, America's culture is "Pop Culture."  That is our culture.  Pathetic.

To steal a quote from Seymour from the Ghost World movie- "Give someone a Big Mac and a pair of Nike's and they’re happy."

Lennon's Working Class Hero mentions something similar in the English psyche, commenting on how they hate you if you're clever and the despise a fool.

I'm not so certain that the anti-intellectualism that we have in America is anti-intelligence. It's just our view that a lot of intellectualism is nothing more than educated idiots spouting a verbose stupidity. There's a wonderful scene in The Aviator where Howard Hughes is confronted by Kathern Hepburn's family, who seem to view him as an uncultured boob, despite him being the only person in the room that has contributed anything particularly useful to society.

Howard Hughes is pretty close to the American ideal. He went out and did what a bunch of educated idiots told him he couldn't do, and he made a fortune doing it. He's intelligent without being an intellectual. You see the same thing with Chuck Yeager, who did what all those educated men thought was impossible.

"Why is“Anti-intellectualism” espoused by pop-culture and the mass media?"

Because no one ever went broke appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Hmmm. I read the letter. So apparently David Cross and Larry the Cable guy are having some kind of  bitchy little slap fight over "who's a smart boy".

Yay? Maybe Penn Gillette and David Spade will join in.

I love Cross as an entertainer, but his off stage persona has never impressed me.  The attitude that I see is something like, "the world is full of idiots and I'm the only one that gets it."

Great actor though.

Your point would have probably been better underscored with a quote from something other than a movie.

I've never quite understood the appeal of Mencia.

Unfortunately, people reeeally seem to love humor based on stereotypes.
