That picture of Barry could be seen as a signpost on a very particular road the industry started along in the latter part of the Sixties and early Seventies. Compare to the shot of Stan, Marie and John Sr. in Stan's office. Take out Spider-Man, and we could be looking at an ad agency on Madison Avenue. Skip back a decade and you'd find the industry staffed with people who weren't even that "cool".But only a few years later we began to see more and more artists and writers coming in for whom the projection of a personal "image" was very nearly as important as the work itself. When you were dealing with a major talent like Barry this was not a problem, of course -- but when we moved down the scale it sometimes became almost comical to see people trooping in to Marvel (and to a lesser extent DC, which stayed "corporate" quite a bit longer) wearing their "uniforms". Hardly anyone went completely untouched by this. And, of course, visit any convention and you will see that the habit has not died. Nowadays, in fact, you might come away with the impression that image has become even more important than the work.

I had the Spider-Man and Hulk Mego's. Those things got played with so much. Spider-Man weathered playtime rather well, but the Hulk eventually lost an arm when the rubberband inside finally snapped, and who knows where his pants went...
