The cover to Machine Man #5 was my first encounter with Kirby's art. Awesome !

But Kirby's art of the 70's is not my favorite of his.

OK. I'm confused.

Did Machine Man come from some sort of adaptation of 2001? I was more
in my Uncle Scrooge phase when Kirby was doing that, so if someone could
fill me in, I'd appreciate it.

Al, these covers may answer your question...

And for a truly weird and wild one...

Kirby's 2001 series did not feature a regular cast.  It featured self-contained storylines spanning one or two issues, spanning eras from prehistoric times to the future.  The only recurring "character" was the monolith.  Generally each storyline ended with the main character being transmogrified into one of those 2001 space fetuses.  I enjoyed the series a lot, but if you sit and read them all back to back it starts to feel formulaic.

In the last two issues of 2001 the character of Mister Machine was introduced.  It's unclear if he was intended to be just another rotating character in the book or if they were planning to make a change and make him the ongoing star.  Or perhaps they had already decided to cancel 2001 and were simply using the last two issues to launch Kirby's new series.  Anyway, Mister Machine appeared in those last two issues.  Aside from an appearance by the monolith, they were not really 2001 stories at all.  Then he was spun off into his own book with a name change to Machine Man.

Chalk me up for liking Coletta's inks. I always thought he brought a sense of texture that complemented quite a few of the pencillers he inked, bringing more depth  and weight to the art in the end product.

Love this cover. Kind of odd, with a pulpy quality like you might find on the cover of the "Shadow Magazine" or "Spicy Detective Stories" in the 30s. Also, "Agents of Kiber" is a cool-sounding Kirby speciality.
