At a casual glance, one would say that Kirby's style was simple & crude, but when you actually take time & look at any of his art you see the detail, complexity & power he put into his work. A lot of artists working now don't have that in what they bring to the drawing table.

Kirby's strengths, to me, lay not in what he drew, but how he drew it. The complexity and power you mention, Ray, are exactly the things he excelled at.

Exactly why I think he shouldn't be known as "the King" or a "Legend",but THE GOD of comic art. Didn't know his name as a kid in the 70's but I knew that art style & bought a number of the comics that have been posted because of him, even if he didn't do interior art on a lot of them. That's how much that art hooked me. The man did what an artist is suppose to do, hook you.

LOVED Coletta's inks on Thor.... it really gave the book such a unique and mythic look compared to Sinnot on the FF...
Never thought Kirby had a good inker after Sinnot and Colleta....Although I really liked Syd Shores on Kirby alot.... Captain America looked awesome!
Giacoia and Royer never did a thing for me....no character to their line at all...

More Invaders, mostly inked by Sinnott. The problem with Colletta is that he left details and heavy blacks out and it showed more when the book wasn't Thor.

Wow, Eric I thought everybody hated those Colletta inks. Anyone else share Eric's view on this?

Gerry has the greatest scans of all time. Always.
Anyway, here is a real nice 70s cover.
But it's weird, because that looks like a Sal Buscema Nova hurtling toward a pure Kirby / Sinnott Thor. Which also makes it intriguing and cool.
Anybody know a story behind this one?

This is the best thread I've seen in quite some time. All you guys with scanners? Keep up the good work. I could look at this artwork all day.
