A perfect piece!
While I can see the Perez in Ultron, I was thinking the Wasp and Yellowjacket might have a touch of him too.
I am more struck by the Kirby I see in so many of the others. Captain America, especially the pose and structure of his legs, brings Kirby's earliest version of the character to my mind. Thor's pose and muscle mass reminds me of Kirby's depiction of him at his peak in the early run. And I think Iron Man, even though he's wearing a later, sleeker version of his armor, still carries that wonderful sense of bulk and "iron-heft" seen in his original form. (So few artists can pull that off.)
Hawkeye seems influenced by Don Heck perhaps. While the Scarlet Witch reads to me as a combination of Kirby's and Heck's. Yet through it all, each character remains JB's own. And for me, that's a wonderful thing to see!
These really are the good ol' days. Thanks for sharing the wealth, JB!

...Funny thing about this piece. Usually -- and I do mean usually -- as I'm working I'm looking at whatever is spilling out of my pencil or pen and thinking "Oh, this is such crap! This is such sh*t! I can't do it any more! It's all over!" I normally have to come back an hour or so after the work is done to look at it again, and decide that maybe it doesn't suck after all... |

I'm the same way. I knew I was in trouble with the pages I did for the Art Challenge thread when I stepped away for a bit, came back and still was very unhappy with the work. Gah!
By the way, the Ultron commission was very much NOT crap. It's GREAT!
And I think your Ultron certainly evokes George Perez's version (which I agree that he owns that character). I, too, thought this commission was very Perez-like. Since you two are my favorite artists, that's a good thing!

The more metal, the better Perez does. His Ultron, Cyborg, Iron Man - all perfect. One of my favorite Avengers was the one with Red Ronin - oh, and Jocasta, the hottest robot ever.
Said too much.

Kevin, you reminded me it is a great time to reread Avengers circa 160-199 again!

Sweetness, what a commission!
What do we need to do to get you back on a Marvel book? Whose knee-caps do we need to break?

Fantastic piece, JB! Thanks again for sharing these.
And to the other Andrew -
I don't necessarily want to see JB on a Marvel book (especially given the
present condition of that particular company), but it would be nice to see
some monthly story-telling. But in the meantime, we can bask in the glow of
these comissions!

This is an amazing piece! I wonder if any artist, past, present or
current in the industry can achieve such perfect backgrounds
with the mere flick of his wrist? I say again, this is an amazing
piece. Thanks for sharing.

The "trick" to drawing straight lines like this, freehand, is to keep 'em short and keep 'em fast. Oh -- and practise!

Ah, JB, I know how you prefer the original Beast, but you always nailed the furry Beast!
