I know how you prefer the original Beast, but you always nailed the furry Beast! *** The furry Beast is a lot of fun to draw (and I had worked out, based on existing data, a way he could have eventually turned up and had a long tenure in HIDDEN YEARS). I just wish he was a whole 'nother character, and that the Hank McCoy of yesteryear was still a character in his own right.

Why is that, JB?

Because the original* Beast was and is fun in his
own right.
*Once Stan and Jack figured out who he was, that is.
Not the brutish McCoy of the first couple of issues.

I like both those beasts but I really am not a fan of the new cat looking version. Where did that come from?

Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, explained as a "secondary mutation" (like Emma Frost turning diamond--which Whedon has now retconned into something done to her, not a secondary mutation).
Cassandra Nova taunts Beast that he (Beast) is devolving, from man to ape to cat, and who knows what next...
Thus far, I've not enjoyed the look of the cat-beast nearly as much, and the character underwent some unsteady times pre-Whedon as well...

Hank turned blue (originally grey) and furry during the All-Monster, All-the-Time period at Marvel. That was just before Kung Fu became the cine qua non of the House that Stan and Jack Built.During that period there was a sudden need to have as many monsters starring in books as could be found, and quickly exhausting the classic pool -- Dracula, Frankenstien, the Wolfman, the Mummy -- somebody had the idea of turning the Beast into a full-fledged Beast. I hated it from the moment I saw the first issue. Over the years, I sort of got used to it, especially after Steve Englehart imbued the "new" character with a whole different personality --- but I still wanted the real Beast back. It was in no small part due to my campaigning, up at the office, that he was briefly de-furred for the launch of X-FACTOR. The catlike Beast, tho --- well, there's nothing at work there except the writer's ego.

****
The few appearances of the "new" Beast in the X-MEN rather acknowledged a sense of "you can't go home again." The way he was presented there, I think, was the best attempt to bridge the psychological change in his character.

Does anyone know who's decision it was to bring back the furry Beast in X-Factor? The Simonsons? Editorial?

The odd thing is that as many times as Beast has been mutated, and I think the number is four, the writers and the readers keep forgetting so much about the old versions.
and why should the readers remember when the writers don't?
now what would it look like for furry Beast to fight de-furred Beast?

Joe Quesada's.
And more than his knees.
I was first introduced to the Beast through the post-Englehart furry
version, and that's the character I think of when I hear the name. I can
understand perfectly well why JB would prefer the classic de-furred Beast
from the early X-Men, though.
Funny that we're talking about the character so much when he's not even
in the commission.
