Very cool art Philippe...very cool, especially Zeck cover.  Amazing stuff.  This is turning into one of my favorite threads.  So nice to see what everyone is getting.

One of the earliest lessons I learned was that the more steps there are before the pencil touches the actual page, the longer that page is going to take to produce and the less enthusiasm the artist will have by the time he finally gets to that page.

That is, more or less, what John Romita Jr told me. But we had a chat with him and a french artist (the one who did the DD cover above) a few years ago ; this french artist said that he absolutely needs to do a lot of work before going to the page because if he went straight to the page he wouldn't feel confident enough. John Jr said they had two different kind of brains (being a funny gentleman he also said that he was a far lesser artist than the french one)

I think that's true for all artforms, Phillippe. Some artists gets it more or less "right" in their first sitting and may also be very swift in producing material. Others need to turn it over and work on it for ages (the latter obviously aren't ideal as commerical artists, needless to say). And then of course, there are occasions which fir either the one or the other to greater or lesser degree.

As my own preferred artistic outlet (or rather the one I can do with any confidence), is writing, I sometimes end re-working something over and over. Other times it's more or less finished in one go. And then there's a lot in-between. :)
I wouldn't say that I'm consistently fast, though I can be swift under the right circumstances, so I lkinda doubt I could produce scripts for monthly comics, for instance (though I could probably keep up with the 22 pages a year which that seems to mean these days). That said, I'd love to work with an artist on something shorter (or at least less time restricted).

Anyways, I too love all the beautful art you guys are posting.

This massive commission is on route from Bob Layton at this very moment.  It turned out rather well, if I do say so myself.

In keeping with forum rules I've shrunk down the scan, but a larger version can be seen here.
