I just got my beautiful page from Generations 1 and it is gorgeous! Two things I noticed and have questions about Mr. Byrne, are the following:

1) I noticed very few (if any) pencil marks on the page. When inking yourself, do you do a lot of it in ink - even the incredibly intricate architecture??

and 2) I also noticed you chose to do the work on the backside of the page - without all the blue-line guides and stuff. Is this normal for you and if so, why?

•••

1)When I am going to ink my own work I do loose or minimal pencils. This is something that evolved while I was working on FANTASTIC FOUR. The first few issues were penciled under the assumption Terry Austin would ink, so I did the same kinds of pencils I had been doing on UNCANNY X-MEN. Then it turned out I would be inking the pages myself. For a few issues, I continued doint full pencils, until it began to sink in that once I did the layouts, the tightening in pencil was pretty much seamless. Reaching for the eraser was rare indeed. So I started "penciling in ink", doing the same kinds of layouts -- including perspective grids, which helps a whole lot with the architecture -- I had done for my pencils.

2) Could be that was a sheet of Marvel paper, or one on which the blue-lines were printed by mistake on the "rough" side.

What a cool page to have, Martin. What year was that published? It looks in great shape.

Thanks for the reply JB! I'd assume that drawing in ink actually loosens up
the images and keeps them fresher. When I see comparisons between
original pencils and the finished inks I can't help but think some of the
dynamism has gone missing while in yours it remains intact.

Sweet Black Cat page - who is Elias? I get a really distinct Frank Robbins
vibe. Were they contemporaries?

Lee Elias - one of the underrated greats.  Did Rip Hunter, Time Master for DC among a billion other things.

Lets keep him underrated so we can afford to buy his pages.

Lately I see dealers buy from other dealers and then double the price on pages I let slip away.  There also inflating the value of recent art - a Batman/Spirit page by Cooke featuring Batman's name spelled out in his cape seriously doubled in price in the hands of the new "owner".

Looks like Raney went to the Rob Liefeld school of anatomy.

I don't see it. In fact I see more Jim Lee influence in the pinup.

Tony, i take it deleting all of your posts about being nice and not criticizing art,and the post above, signals a more forthright way of commenting?
