No shame in being a collector; better than a speculator.

Agreed Stuart and from reading the posts in this thread, people are getting their pieces because they love the characters not for monetary gain.

I have a Dr Strange collection, a small one but it is slowly growing. I do have one Kirby page from Mr Miracle #17 page 12. Bought it a few years back when Kirby pieces were more reasonable. I also agree with David, I get the pieces I love not for monetary gain but for my enjoyment. I have never sold any of my sketches or original art pieces and never will.

People sometimes ask why I have certain pieces. It's always the same answer -- they have some special significance for me. If I can wrap that up with historical significance, like my SUPERMAN/SPIDER-MAN spreads, or my Shuster Superman sketch, or my page from the first Silver Age Hawkman appearance, that's dandy. But it always starts with "What does this mean to me?"

Yeah. First thing that truly amazed me a few weeks back when I finally started browsing the Original art market on eBay was how little some of the sellers seemed to care about listing the actual artists on a page. Just yesterday I was browsing closing auctions in the 10 to 40 dollar range (my buying range) and found pages listed as "BATMAN AND ROBIN" along with "SUPERMAN.SUPERMAN. SUPERMAN" etc. Looked at the listings - pages from Superfriends. Looked at the art and almost fell over backwards. Ramona Fradon. I've been typing in searches for Ramona Fradon for three weeks straight and when I finally find some of her art the artist isn't even identified. I've been a fan of hers for 20 years based on her Brenda Starr run. Even more of a fan after reading her work in the Showcases.
Looks like Vince Colletta's inking on the page I bought is gorgeous, too (yeah, I know, but when he really put the work in he was a great inker. Especially on female characters.)
It takes so little effort sometimes to find out who the artist is on a page, and most fans don't browse by every new listing to sift through the dross. (And if I ever see another listing for crappy "Sexy Supergirl" fan-art I'll be tempted to claw my eyes out.)

" I get the pieces I love not for monetary gain but for my enjoyment. I have never sold any of my sketches or original art pieces and never will."
I tend to find comments of this nature to be confusing to me.
I would love to think that I could spend the thousands of dollars that I've spent for my collection without ever having to sell it. Realistically, I tend to have to view the art collection as an investment. One that could be turned into money if ever needed. Now, it would break my heart to have to sell most of the collection, but it helps justify writing the checks, and making my wife not kill me.
I also quite enjoy selling parts of the collection that I no longer like (tastes change over the years). It allows me to re-invest into new commissionss, and if I've made a profit, fantastic- more money to invest.
This is a different attitude then "I just bought it to re-sell", but also different then collectors that buy very specific, sometimes odd, personal, and expensive commissions. There's a guy who collects Prez drawings that had George Perez draw Superman holding a dead Prez ala the Crisis cover. Great idea, but I just couldn't spend that many hundreds of dollars on something so crazy specific.. Another person has a large collection of Amethyst commissions. Cool idea, but in my world, that equals a tough sell if needed.
By no means meant to be a judgement call, just my own attitude towards being able to spend my money. I have a collection of signed, personalized photos of super-hero actors, and I laugh everytime I plunk down the $20 that it's $20 down the drain. But $20 for a smile on my face is different than $200...
As for JB's comments on "What does this mean to me?" I tend to look at some of the pages that I've bought that don't have a specific memory related to them, and I don't tend to enjoy them as much. These tend to be the "buyer's remorse" pages that eventually get re-sold, and I'm always gratefull to be able to get my money back.
I do love my Ditko/Byrne Rom page...

Thanks, Dave.
That's a gorgeous piece. Ramona Fradon truly is one of the greatest comic book artists ever. She makes superheroics look like a lot of fun.
