Another piece from Baltimore. Cowboy Wally as The Shadow by Kyle Baker. And yes, that's what I asked for.

Another great piece, Roger. I'm a big fan of Kyle Baker and that makes for a really cool idea.

The Cowboy Wally Show and his run on The Shadow are what got me into Baker's work. I thought that this was a fun way to combine the two characters. And it plays into his, and my, sense of humor.

I played around with it a bit to bring it closer to its real pencil color.  The other image looked pretty washed out.

Great piece Ryan.

I think Walt would get plenty of business if he opened the commission door. (I know I'd be interested)

I read Walt Simonson's Elric books, and even after having been a fan of his for decades, even knowing what to expect, I was still blown away.  If I'm ever able to afford one of those gorgeous, oversize pages, let alone a commission from him, then it would be because his work is seriously undervalued and the original artwork market is filled with Philistines. (No offense intended towards actual as opposed to metaphorical Philistines.)

Here's a nice pencil drawing of the Thing that I got from Ron Wilson in Baltimore.

Just picked up my very first piece of original art--Generations #4 page 38.

Sorry for the small picture--I don't have access to a scanner so I'm posting an image originally used by Jim Warden to advertise the piece on his site.  This pic really doesn't do it justice, so I'll try to get a larger scan to post.

I'd also like to thank Mr. Byrne for graciously signing and personalizing the page to me.  JB was the first artist I became aware of, and whose work I began to look for by name way back when.  It means a lot that he signed it for me.

I'd also like to recommend Jim Warden:  his communication with me was always timely and polite, and he was truly a joy to work with.  I'm looking forward to getting more original pieces (and a commission or two after I save up for a while).

If I may ask a question of the forum, what is it that got you into collecting original art in the first place?  For me, it was a desire to own a one-of-a-kind piece of history from a hobby I've enjoyed for as long as I can remember.  I also love the idea of being able to see the line work in such detail--including the notes to the editor, stats, and all the other "behind the scenes" stuff that goes into the making of a comic.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to getting to interact with so many great fans (not to mention JB himself).  If I could go back in time and tell the 12 year old version of myself that not only would I one day own an actual piece of JB's art, but there would also be a place where JB hangs out with fans on a daily basis, the younger me would have flipped!

Welcome Lloyd!

I would love to see a scan of the dedicated line JB wrote for you on the page!

Thanks

••

For me, it was the simpe discovery that such things existed.

Today, with so much original art to be found, it may be hard to imagine that there was a time when such pages were scarce almost to the point of non-existance. When I first saw a piece of original comicbook art, I was somewhat surprised. I am not sure just what I thought happened to the pages, but it had not really occured to be that they not only continued to exist beyond their original use, but that they might be available for sale.

The art I saw was in the modest collection of a guy named John Mansfield, he who, as some of you may know, "discovered" me. He had a few pages for sale, and from them I selected the very first page of comic art I bought, a Russ Heath Sgt Rock page I chose mostly on the strength of the exquisite line work.

That knocked over the first domino, and it was not too long before I began to realize the true potential of collecting original art, and that there were certain "holy grails" I might track down with a little patience. Almost forty years later, I am happy to report that I have, indeed, found most of them.
