Dan,
Since you apparently missed the whole thread dedicated to that Avengers
piece, let me say that Pat Ditton, as my friend, did the recreation for
me FOR FREE. He never asked me for anything in way of
payment. It is also NOT a trace. He did it free hand,
pencil, pen, and ruler.
Also, there is a credit to the original artist and I'll be happy to post a scan of it tomorrow.
Oops, sorry, I missed the part where you don't care. Never mind.

I wasn't saying I don't care in general.
I was saying it doesn't matter if the "creator" says he gave credit.
I looked at the piece in this thread and at the link he provided, and I saw no credit.
Either way, I don't want to make enemies. I apologize if i jumped to conclusions.
Thanks,
Dan

I had posted this - but removed it - not wanting to get into it, but...
Dan - I've inked 5 pieces of art my entire life (and it shows) -- it's something NEW for me. For the past 30 years (since I was a little boy) - I've free-hand copied pictures in pencil. Recently through the encouragement of guys like Ryan, Gerry, Ari, etc. - I started to try and ink my own stuff. In fact - I think it was Joe Rubenstein several months ago who told me (in an email) to "not be afraid" - or something like that (about trying to ink my own stuff). So I tried it.
I've never offered anything like this for sale - but if I did, the person buying would be buying MY inks over what I consider to be someone else's "LAYOUTS" (even though I'm the person who physically laid the piece out in pencil). I would never lay claim to the "originality" of the design of the art. And the buyer would definitely know it was not an original cover, but a reproduction.
Many people own re-productions of art - is it any different that a printer machine reproduces something as opposed to a person ? I would argue that a one-of-a-kind reproduction by a real person would have more intrinsic value to the buyer than a simple xerox - yet I'm looking at a Star Trek "Ships of the Line" calendar right now that is art reproduced by a printer - and people paid money for it. If some artist were to spend the time to recreate one of these incredible paintings of the Enterprise on canvas -- wow -- who cares if it's a re-creation - that would be amazing and many would buy it. Of course, something by the ORIGINAL artist (like Byrne traces his original covers) - will bring more dollar value than say, Pat Ditton, recreating something of Byrne's.
Let me offer a scenario -- John Byrne pencils a cover to "FX #2". Karl Kesel is asked to ink the cover and does a fine job. But then Terry Austin offers to ink the cover, too, and Wayne and John decide to use Terry's inks. So here's a fully inked cover by Kesel that never sees print, that is almost identical to the one that does. So which cover is the "original" and which is a "reproduction"? Or do the rules not apply since both covers were "professionally" commissioned? So, now add another layer to this. Wayne, a friend, emails me a preview of the cover to FX #2 and I take it upon myself to practice my inks by reproducing the cover myself. Am I now considered a knock-off artist if I give that piece to Ari Shapiro here at JBF?
If you go to my CAF gallery (under my name) - you'll see I give full credit to the original artists ON the pieces AND in the descriptions. You'll also see a small sample of stuff I "copied" about 20 years ago - just trying to prove to you I've been doing this a long time and am pretty accurate in my reproduction.
It was my protocol error to NOT include the credits on the piece before I scanned it. I now make a point to pencil the credits immediately on the page so that never happens again.
In the other thread Ryan mentioned, even John Byrne stated that my GIFT to Ryan of this piece has intrinsic value to Ryan.
Here's a picture I sent to Ryan when I began the piece - side-by-side with the print-out of the page I worked from.
I hope we can lay this to rest - but I know my remarks here are going to stir up a whole hornets nest.

I jumped to conclusions... therefore I apologize.
Your work is very good. Enough so that I thought it was a trace.
Pardon my ignorance... I am new to the boards... not the best way for me to make friends... again, my apologies

Dan - it's no problem -- it's a very interesting topic to debate. As I type this I'm listening to some blonde chick (I don't recognize) signing a cover version of a popular song to open the Sunday night football season. Same argument here - if someone likes the cover version of the song and someone doesn't -- personal choice, I guess.
Besides -- there are plenty of flaws in that Avengers piece. I would hope a direct trace would not have them. I screwed up the out-stretched hand a little, I ink lines too thickly, my clouds suck, my lettering sucks and the "head" box is horrible. Add to this that I was working from a crappy copy of the cover - I could get no detail for the four figures in the clouds.
I'm much happier with the ALPHA FLIGHT 25 re-imagine than the Avengers 57 - and I'm REALLY happy with another piece I just did for a friend, but it's their call to post it or not.

>>Now, take it to the "next level". As Stan Lee is wont to say, in Marvel Comics, characters don't reach for the phone, they REACH for the phone.
Couldn't resist. From one of my FF pages:

The Wonder Woman piece I got off eBay finally came in today, and here's a scan of it without the D9 Arts logo and the artist's name plastered across it like in the picture I posted before:
It would come in while I'm out buying frames for two other pieces of art I have (the two Possum sketches in my gallery).....
The actual picture is 7 x 11.
*edit* Gerry, Pat, that Doctor Strange piece looks terrific!
(Pat, have you ever done any Batman work?)

Hi Brian --
Honestly - the few pieces here are almost all the "big" pieces I've done. This is a hobby that I'm trying to take to the next level and push my skills a little.
My next piece I'm working on is a re-imagining of a Batman cover for ARI. I did do a Batman character sketch for ARI - completely original - it's in my CAF.
email me off board if you have any other questions patditton@aol.com
I like that WW -- I always prefer the feminine/sexy WW to the butched out Alex Ross versions.
