That's an amazing piece, James! I adore the shots of Cyclops.

I picked up a number of pages from the graphic novel Dazzler: The Movie in a recent eBay auction and found this splash page from Dazzler #29 mixed in with the batch.  For some reason, the art was actually done in two parts with the attacking plane drawn on a separate overlay.  I've attached both pieces below along with a hyperlink to my web site with high-resolution scans of the 22 pages pages from the graphic novel, since I didn't want to clog up this thread with all of the pages.

A friend, seeing the pencils, dubbed this the "Help
me up, and I'll point over here" page.

James, on that Dazzler page, am I seeing this right?

They were printing the linework on the plane in blue, dropping the blacks, so they cut the whole thing out of the physical artwork? Why would they do that? Why not a simple white, temporary paste-up over the plane and then taking the blue overlay from art cut from a photostat?

Why anyone would do that kind of stuff on the original art when they don't have to is beyond me.

Roger Stern likes to tell of an observation he made during his days working in the Marvel offices. Interns would come in, new to the job, and for a while they'd handle the artwork like it was made out of spun glass. Not too long, tho, and they'd be tossing whole books across the bullpen. "Here's the latest Buscema job!" Hoist!

Chaykin tells the story of doing a job in which he made extensive use of subjective contour, letting black space define adjacent areas without any holding lines. Shortly after he turned it in, he came into the office to find an editor "correcting" this, adding in the "missing" lines, with a felt tip pen, directly on the original art.

For any who cling to the idea that comics are an art form masquerading as a business. . .

You're definitely seeing it right.  I'm not sure why they did it that way.
