I remember, back when I was writing a comic book about a flaming skulled demon riding a mororcyle and avenging spilled innocent blood, a certain assistant editor refering to the character as "GHOSTIE". It made me shiver.

Any reason you can't say Ghost Rider? Ghostie=FEH!!! And Jonathan, I do not agree with your assessment.

JB, I've noticed you refer to Captain America as Cap before. What's the distinction there?

The new Legion animated program is using the Waid shtick (or at least Waid was the first that I saw use it) of the characters taking on superhero sounding names as a tribute to the heroes of the past.
Explaining why they would use outdated, corny names like Bouncing Boy and Matter Eater Lad.
Though I don't know what would be considered as outdated in future centuries.

In an issue of the early 70's Adventure Comics, Superboy thought this
statement in a fight with Mordru who was using a magic fire attack.
"Come on, Supie 'ol kid. Head down, straight ahead and think of
icebergs." From the moment I read that Supie has been a moniker I've
used for the character, even though he only ever said it that one time.

Okay, I don't think I've ever used my nickname when talking to myself (in speech or thought). That's just weird.
If anything, I'll use some derogatory remark. (Example: After taking the wrong exit off of the highway, I'll scream, "Nice move YOU MORON!")
...which thrills the other members of the carpool.

In a recent thread about how everyone sees Galactus differently, I mentioned
that I saw him as having a candy-coated shell. JB produced the image, and I
appropriated it for my avatar.
Because planets melt with the power cosmic, not in your hands.

It's just lovely as an Avatar, John. :)
Makes me think that my own actual, though a couple of years old (sporting quite a beard at the moment, but otherwise not much changed), photograph is somewhat boring as an avatar. But heck, it's me. :)

Yeah, a lot of the nicknames originated in the books themselves. Wally
West has used "Supes" and "Bats" several times in the JLA books. Other
teammates refer to Red Tornado as "Reddy" and while I'm not sure if
anyone has ever called Magneto "Mags", Jubilee definetely used "Wolvie"
for Wolverine.
I never saw them as derogatory terms. Comics are supposed to be fun, y'know? I've always tought nicknames were part of the fun.

We have a rare opportunity in relating to comic book legends with this website.
Titles have not lost their luster...just ask.
My first post asked JB whether or not I should refer to him as Mr. Byrne, as I am prone to do, and he gave me permission to refer to him as "JB."
Just give respect where it is due.

Jonathan said "It's being stated that giving fictional characters nicknames is not on,
but on the other hand, let's slather real people for no apparent reason."
Since you seem to want to bring up certain threads again, you should go reread them. Whether you disagree with it or not, there was a VERY apparent reason given.

David Whiteley, I can't believe you defend this behaviour. It is behaviour NO rational, normal, person, would condone.
And I'll leave it at that. It really is that simple. It's not a matter of opinion, it WAS wrong.
