Wow, I don't think I have ever seen someone try so hard to miss a point.

Hm. If someone says that civilians will not know what he's talking about if he uses "Spidey" that point seems fairly obvious.

What, exactly, am I "missing"?

Spidey is surely the exception to the rule, but you knew that. ;)

I'd have no problem using nicknames around civilians. Depends on the length of the conversation.  If I'm asking them if they want to see the new Spider-Man movie, then I've going to say "Spider-Man", but if we're having a lengthy discussion about Spider-Man, I'm very likely going to say "Spidey" a fair bit.  Same deal with Bats and Supes and Wolvie and all the other commonly used nicknames.

With Star Wars, I pretty much only use the nicknames for R2-D2, C3PO, and Chewbacca.  R2, Threepio, and Chewie are the preferred terms in my book, since they're used far more often than their real names.

Is DD considered a nick name or is it excluded because the character actually has a DD symbol on his chest?

In any case, Spidey and Cyke are nicknames/shorter versions I grew up with, I like using and in no way do i mean disrespect. Supes I also find myself using, especially when I talk with my brother, but I don't really like it. must be because it reminds me of "soup".

Spider-Man spelled wrong is another matter and at the very least an American Spider-Man fan shuld always spell it correctly. We foreigners must have some leniency, because in many cases it wasn't the name we were introduced to the character.

In any case, since John doesn't approve the use of nicknames, and I do see his point, I won't use it over here. I don't see the fuss over the matter. It's not like someone got banned because of his use of superhero nicknames, right?
