I'm not prepared to take the extra step and attribute their use to some deep-seated hatred (or at least lack of respect) for superheroes; nor do I think that their use is really a significant factor in the public perception of comics.

Yet, as noted, we do not find this compulisive ("Maggie", "Gally", "Poccy") use of cringe-inducing diminutives in other areas closely akin to comics. No "Hannie" and "Darthie". No "Kirkie" and "Spockie". Why not? If anything, STAR TREK and STAR WARS fans are even more deeply embedded in their hobbies than comicbook fans. How is it that they are able to resist this compulsion to show their "familiarity" with the characters? As also noted, we have "Chewie" and "Scotty" to pave the way. Why the restraint?

Could it be spelled R-E-S-P-E-C-T?

I'm really, really sad to report this, but...

I just googled "star trek spockie" and immediately pulled up some slash fiction about "spockie".  I won't link to it, but it's on the first page of entries.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to see if I can scrub that from my brain...

Usually involves the characters either getting killed in gruesome ways or placed into pornographic stories.  From the looks of the link I found I think it was the latter.

Aren't you sorry you asked?  :)

Kinda, Rick.  I've never read nor written any "slash" fiction, but am aware of the genre (for want of a better term).

For those curious, the name comes from the slash used between the names of the characters who are paired up in the story.

The first that I heard of was the "Kirk/Spock" stuff.  But, there's probably just as many kinds as there are popular shows out there.  I've also heard of Buffy/Giles "slash" and Buffy/Willow "slash," not to mention Spike/Angel, Picard/Riker and so forth.

John, could it be that Maggie, Gally, and Poccy (and Spidey, Supes, Bats, Cyke, etc...) are actually abbreviations?  Spockie, Kirkie, and Darthie actually take more sylables to say than Spock, Kirk, and Darth.  Whereas, as you pointed out, Chewbaca, a longer name, does get shortened to Chewie by Star Wars fans hardcore and casual alike.

When you used Wolvie at the top of that page of art, was it just as a time saver?  Or do you think there was a bit of jaded fan/creator sneaking in there that you've since recognized and banished?  That's an honest question, by the way.  I'm not presuming anything.

Also, wouldn't a quick jog around the internet and it's multitudes of Star Trek slash fiction, Star Wars parody videos, and other bits like that prove that fans of both don't exactly hold the material in the highest of regard, regardless of the lack of nicknames?

JB, that's actually not true. Star Wars fans are always giving the characters nicknames and doing parodies that poke tremendous fun at the characters and the inconsistancies in the series. Go take a look around YouTube when you have a moment and you'll see.

"Scotty" squelches that theory, doesn't it?

I love professional sports and make fun of  the conventions of sports and the athletes who play them often.

I love my family and will point out their quirks for fun sometimes, as families tend to do.

I love superheroes, and will rip on the conventions of it for a kick.

I love myself, yet will regularly make fun of my own quirky habits and stuff.

Are you saying I secretly harbor disrespect for all of these things, including myself and my family? See the point?
