And ("Gally") sounds REALLY dumb.

Whereas "Maggie" and "Wolvie" sound like MENSA.

(Funny thing is, without realizing it, you're actually
starting to get my point.)

Nope.  As I noted previously, "Maggie" is equally stupid.  "Wolvie" isn't much better.

I think we're agreed that terms like "Maggie" and "Thorie" are dumb and annoying, although where you see it as a sign of disrespect, I see it as the exact opposite - fans who have become a little TOO attached to their fictional "friends" and derive comfort from acting like these drawings are their buddies.  I don't see "Spidey" the same way, though, given that Stan himself used it so frequently.

NEITHER DO I. I just prefer the fun of typing out "Spider-Man". (Or, to save my typing fingers in a plot, "S-Man".)

Just, you know, if he had to have a nickname, I like Galacty better.

Either way, this one really makes my point for me. "Gally" is unfamiliar to most of the posters here, so it's "silly". "Wolvie" and "Maggie" are sort of okay. "Spidey" is beyond reproach.

Now put yourself in a group of civilians. Their only exposure to Spider-Man, Batman or the X-Men is the movies. You find yourself engaged in conversation with them about these, your favorite characters. And because you're "comfortable and familiar" with these imaginary guys, you naturally call them by these "nicknames". "Bats" you say, when refering to Christian Bales' character in "Batman Begins". "Wolvie" is how you refer to Hugh Jackman's* character.

Go ahead. Tell me you'd do that in a room full of civilians.

*To whom, happy birthday, btw.

Sayeth Byrne: "Either way, this one really makes my

sort of okay. "Spidey" is beyond reproach. Now put

Aye, there's the rub! To be honest, I was on the fence
about this one too, way back when it was first
brought up. 'Kitty Pryde calls Wolverine "Wolvie," so
why can't I?'

Then I saw someone online talking about their
favorite X-Men story involving the villain Apocalypse.
"Best Poccy story ever," was how they began their
exegesis ...

It threw John Byrne's side of the argument into stark
relief. I totally saw the point then. And it's not like I
even think Apocalypse is all that great a character, or
one for whom I have any great deal of affection and
respect. But, Christ ... "Poccy"?

I saw the light.

It's also why I knew -- as soon as somebody
expressed doubts as to anybody actually calling
Galactus "Gally" --- I just KNEW that if I googled it, I
would find multiple examples of people doing just
that.

And you weren't kidding! Just for funzies I googled "Galactus Gally". It's for real!
Pathetic, really.
As George Carlin once said, "It makes me want to engage in an involuntary personal protein spill!"
