Why is "Thorie" an "ugh" but "Wolvie" and "Maggie" aren't?

Because "Thorie" isn't his real nickname.  That'd be "Goldilocks", courtesy of Stan "The Man" Lee.

Wolvie has been used in stories by Marvel.

And you misspelled Maggia as a nickname for Mafia. : )

But of course, you were going for Magneto, and that nickname, like Thorie, has never been used, which is why they sound "odd" and elicit the "ugh".

I think Serge meant that "Maggie" as a nickname
"hasn't been used" in the comics.

As you say, Wallace, "Mags" is more common. I
know I've seen Wolverine call him that in a few X-Men
issues.

"Hasn't been used in the comics" pretty well
underscores my point, doesn't it?

The thread's focus has been on "real world" people using nicknames for the characters.

Holy smokes!  People really do say "Gally".

Wow.  That's... really nerdy.

Only just got back to this thread, and I have to further respond:

I'll try and make it clearer JB, as you seem to have missed my point.  I see the use of those nick-names in the same way as certain characters have their own dialogue.  For instance, I can easily see say Johnny Storm calling Spider-Man "Spidey" and Ben Grimm calling him "Web-Head"  Mr Fantastic would always refer to him as "Spider-Man", as would Sue.  For myself, the only one I've ever heard myself use (and rarely at that) is Spidey, as he is supposed to be the common man's hero, so it makes sense the reader would be comfortable with that.  I'm more than comfortable with using those terms in my head too.

Oh, and I did get it in context.  I don't recall Stan ever having Dr Octopus refer to himself as Ockie or Magneto as Maggie or some such.  That's what I meant when I sadi if it was good enough for Stan. He understood when it was right to use it.

JB, Please don't put words in my mouth or read my mind..  You don't like it, nor do I.  If you didn't understand what I was trying to say, (I make no claims of being a writer) perhaps a polite request for clarification would have been applicable?

Why? Why any "nerdier" than "Spidey" or "Supes"?

* * *

Because those two, especially "Spidey", are all over the comics themselves.  Marvel even published a series with "Spidey" in the title.

"Gally" is something someone on the internet made up.  And it sounds REALLY dumb.

While you're "making things clear" perhaps you should clear your own eyes enough to note that I have made precisely the point that the characters use such terms when addressing each other. I used the word "context" several times.

Now tell me that a fanboy calling Magneto "Maggie" or Galactus "Gally" is the same as Ben Grimm calling Iron Man "Shell-Head" or Mr. Mxyzptlk calling Superman "Supes". Make that "clear" for me, wouldja?
