"Wow. The number of merit badgers, agenda warriors and self-styled
martyrs
in this thread is absolutely staggering.

Sad."

JB wrote (in response to my previous post):
"Neither. Nor was that my point.

But you knew that."

And I hope you know that I fully agree with you when it comes to that list of horrid nicknames you posted.
*shudder*
They don't seem to have anything at all to do with the characters themselves.

Sad.

People, it's JB's forum and his rule. No need to get into dick measuring
contests.

Or, John, maybe it is just people who disagree with JB and wish to debate him on hte subject because we hope to hear a better reason that the same one he has given time and again yet has failed to win us over.

No need to be so belittling just because we don't agree.  I don't think anyone has been rude.

I do not agree with this assessment.  Several posters, in my opnion, have been deliberately antagonistic.  An exchange of ideas need not be hostile.

Maybe that's because John M feels some need to jump in and call anyone disagreeing a martyr or of having an agenda, when really it's just discussion?

No wonder JB gets accused of having brainwashed Byrnebots, etc, when dudes like John M are getting all bent just because someone disagrees! JB is a great debater, and it's intersting to discuss these things with him - he's a big boy and can skillfully deflect any opinion without John M, et al jumping in to defend! :)

How interesting would this place be if it was all people just going "right you are, JB!"?

"An exchange of ideas need not be hostile."

Exactly. Too often that gets forgotten here.

Brett, should forum members who agree with JB curtail their posts?  Are they the only ones you would describe as getting "all bent" in this thread...?

Aric Shapiro: Several posters, in my opnion, have been deliberately antagonistic.

In the past several weeks I've noticed an increase in the number of people who seem to be nothing but antagonistic, as if that's their entire reason for being here.

Perhaps they have too much free time?

So, now it's antagonism to disagree.  I honestly can't see the validity of Mr. Byrne's point.  He's certainly entitled to his opinion about nicknames, but he hasn't offered a lick of proof that civilians think less of super-heroes because someone calls Superman "Supes".  The mainstream audience has never been particularly keen on super-heroes, and they probably respect them more now than at anytime in their history. Granted, that's not a whole lot, but nicknames... think it's a total non-starter. They're much more likely to think poorly of the genre because of the costumes and the secret identities and the simplistic moral codes and all the other things that have them tagging it as goofy kid's stuff.  Lack of "awe" ain't really in the equation.

As compared to the mountains of evidence presented by the "other side"?

Unless you are visiting from a parallel universe in which superhero comics -- and, indeed, comics in general -- are held in some kind of high esteme, the "proof" that civilians look upon comics and their readers with contempt is all around us. (Matt Groening didn't decide to use "The Simpsons" to reinforce a positive image of comicbook fans, did he? Reading comics is still Hollywood shorthand for "this guy is a bit slow".)

When "fans" refer to Superman and Batman as "Supes" and "Bats" it doesn't do much to elevate the form, does it? Civilian critics will still point to those comics that go against the basic form -- WATCHMEN, MAUS, SIN CITY -- as how comics should be, while everything else is crap. One can debate forever whether those examples represent a new high in comicbooks. But one can also note that fans of the series don't talk about Manny, or Nightie, or Silkie, or Marvie.

I wonder why not?
