Yep, because being a poster on a message board is exactly the same as being paid to work on the characters. You're a dumbass, Roger.

Not to mention I'd expect the artist to write in shorthand to conserve space for other notes or artwork.

Or... was there a point we're missing, Roger?

The rules that apply to JB and creators of comics don't apply to just us fans,
Roger. When you write or draw Batman, THEN you will be allowed to call him
Bats.

I won't disagree with the second part of your statement, but I do have issue with the first.  How on earth you can say it's ok for the creator (artist, caretaker, call it what you like) to use it - the one who has the most vested interest in the character, the one who is responsible for said character staying true - but not ok for a fan to use as a term of affection?  In other words to you, if John does it, it's ok, but if anyone else does it, they're disrespectful?

I have to admit that seeing what Roger posted borders on crushing for me. I have no problem with "do as I say" as long as it's not "do as I say, not as I do".

This hurts, in its own way.

Perhaps in here, but in the real world I'm allowed to enjoy comics and their characters as much as I like and in any fashion that won't send me to prison or the asylum.

If you're going to tell me that John Byrne and other creators have the monopoly on the use of certain words, you've crossed into insanity yourself.

I don't refer to Vietnam as 'nam or as "the shit", because I wasn't there.  But putting the use of the term "Bats" in a similar category is plain silly.

YOU  WEREN'T  THERE....  YOU  DON'T  KNOW  HOW  IT  WAS!

You are very rude! Paid or not, these nicknames are disrespectful.

Shorthand? Fan or otherwise, it diminishes the character, it's disrespectful! Hopefully, that goes for everyone! There were no other notes, and there's not much space needed to be conserved outside the art area.

I'd say that the nickname usage would apply only to those who are members of the X-Men.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've read in any message board.

Is there a list us lowly fans are allowed and not allowed to do? Who wrote it?

Seriously, it seems you have never read a Marvel comic in your life. One of the reasons Stan endeared himself and the characters he helped create is precisely because of the nicknames derided here. Big difference from the distant, prim and proper characters from DC. They aren't terms of disrespect. I've seen many fans who hate superheroes, and none of them use them, they use truly derogatory terms. Not "Bats"

The reason we're not 'allowed' to use those nicknames is because is because of respect, not for the characters, but for the wishes of someone like John Byrne who is nice enough to spend some of his time interacting here with his fans.

You would all be much happier here if you would not question such things.

The real question is - when Captain Carrot sees Galactus, what does he look like?
